This 2023 draft class was seen as one of the most highly regarded draft classes with a generational prospect in Victor Wembanyama and many top prospects like Scoot Henderson and Brandon Miller. Today, a year after the draft, we review how the draft might have changed if the teams could see what these players rookie season would look like before the draft. Let dive into it!
#1: Victor Wembanyama, C, San Antonio
There is no arguing that this pick by the Spurs definitely has worked out so far. Winning the 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year Award and being the runner-up for the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award, Victor had a stellar season averaging 21.4 points, about 3 and a half blocks and about 10 and a half blocks a game. Will Wemby live up to the hype and be something we have never seen before?
#2: Brandon Miller, SF, Charlotte Hornets
Brandon Miller was highly-hyped to become a star 2-way wing, the next coming of Paul George and so far he is showing promise. Miller averaged 17.3 points per game, shot 37.3% from deep and is definitely showing promise on the defensive side of the ball. Will he become a great #2 option for the Hornets and possibly play a big role in leading them to the playoffs?
#3: Scoot Henderson, PG, Portland Trail Blazers
While Scoot Henderson did not have the best rookie season or live up to the expectations, he still has some of the best potential in this draft and 3-5 years in the future I do not think the Trail Blazers will regret this pick. Scoot averaged 14 points per game on 38.5% shooting. Will he live up to the expectations and be the point guard he was destined to be?
#4: Amen Thompson, PG, Houston Rockets
I feel that when I say Amen Thompson was the right pick for Houston a lot of people would agree with me. While he has not yet developed a jump shot shooting 14% from three, he contributes a great level of raw athleticism, defensive skills and great promise. What will he turn into in the next few years? Will he be a top player for the Rockets in the future?
#5: Brandin Podziemski, SG, Detroit Pistons
Last year at this spot, the Pistons drafted Ausar Thompson which was not a bad pick but one of the things Detroit needed badly was shooting. For the Warriors, Podziemski shot 38.5% from beyond the arc and he would definitely have been a big help for them. What would happen differently if the Pistons drafted him?
Going through this list, there was not much to change. This draft had a bunch of talent in it and the teams did a great job drafting their players. Would you have done it differently? Maybe Scoot wouldn't go #3? Let us know below. Feel free to leave any suggestions.
